CHENNAI: In the backdrop of a huge spike in Covid-19 positive cases in the state, Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Monday requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to begin regular air and train services to the state until May 31.
During a videoconference with Modi, the chief minister said, “I request you not to begin regular air services till May 31. We know from the press that regular train service to Chennai and from Chennai will commence on May 12. As the positive cases in Chennai are showing an increasing trend, don’t permit train service till May 31 in my state.”
Palaniswami sought to convey that his government had sent 13,284 people, including guest workers and those who came for treatment, to their native states in 12 trains. The government also planned to send willing migrant labourers and others in 61 trains from May 11 to 17 based on the consent of the recipient states, he said. “I request the chief ministers concerned to give their consent early,” he said.
The state has received four flights and one ship under Vande Bharat and Samudra Setu missions that evacuated Indians stranded abroad. Around 900 passengers have been quarantined in various institutions and tested as per standard operating procedures.
