Auto dealers planning to launch their own online sales platform
- Auto makers have announced a big shift to digital dealerships to woo customers to fight their way up from nil sales last month but a fight over data has seen a section of dealers launch their own dedicated online sales platform.
- Dealerships, which opened last week, saw near zero footfalls, and in such times companies such as Hyundai, Tata Motors, Honda & Mahindra have announced their digital platform initiatives. However, larger dealers especially those associated with multi brands, are launching their own direct dealer digital models.
‘Trump Death Clock’ counts preventable US coronavirus deaths
- A newly erected billboard in New York’s Times Square shows the number of US coronavirus deaths that its creator says could have been avoided if President Donald Trump had acted sooner — and it’s called the “Trump Death Clock.”
- Created by filmmaker Eugene Jarecki, the “clock” was installed on the roof of a Times Square building, empty due to the pandemic. As of Monday, the counter showed more than 48,000 deaths out of a total of more than 80,000, by far the highest tally in the world.
Covid-19 impact: Global pension funds pause India investment
- Top global pension funds have suspended India investment plans until they come to grips with the damage Covid-19 does to global and local economies, and their portfolios stabilise amid extreme market volatility and uncertainty.
- Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (OTPP), Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB), Australian Super and Caisse de Dépôt et Placement du Québec (CDPQ), among others, had slated billions of dollars in India directly, via private equity (PE) or other funds, but have either put plans on hold or are reconsidering, two people with direct knowledge of the matter said.
Jharkhand reports another COVID-19 case, total count mounts to 161
Maruti Suzuki delivers 1,600 cars, Hyundai retails 608 in past week
- Since automobile dealerships reopened after 40 days on May 4, market leader Maruti Suzuki has delivered more than 1,600 cars and rival Hyundai Motor has retailed 608 vehicles.
- These were vehicles mostly booked before the lockdown was announced, anticipating deliveries on the auspicious days during Navratra, Akshaya Tritiya and Gudi Padwa. The orders could not be completed as the country went into a lockdown on March 25.
Goa diagnostic company’s tuberculosis device could help scale up Covid-19 testing
- A Goa-based startup’s device is set to become one of the key diagnostic tools as India looks to expand its testing capacity for Covid-19.
- Truenat, a product of Molbio Diagnostics that’s been used to detect tuberculosis, also speeds up the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique, which detects the presence of the coronavirus.
Gujarat confirms 347 new COVID-19 cases, tally now 8,542
- As many as 347 new positive cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Gujarat, taking the total count in the state to 8,542.
- “A total of 347 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Gujarat. The total number of cases stands at 8542 now, including 2,780 people who recovered and 513 deaths,” according to an official statement issued by the State Health Department.
Covid-19: Tests soon to gauge immunity levels
- The health ministry and the India Council of Medical Research (ICMR) are set to launch a survey to determine how many people in the country have developed immunity to the SARS-Cov2 virus.
- In the initial stage of the population-based serological survey, blood samples will be collected from 800 individuals from each of the selected districts to study the extent to which Covid-19 has spread undetected across communities, gender and age groups, said officials.
- The survey will focus on high-risk groups such as healthcare professionals and on low-risk individuals such as those without fever and pregnant women.
‘Indiscriminate use of hydroxychloroquine in Mumbai a cause of concern’
- Health authorities in Mumbai are indiscriminately giving hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) to adults and children in a bid to curb the spread of Covid-19, a health advocacy group has alleged, raising ethical questions over a therapy that lacks clinical evidence of efficacy in treating the disease.
- The disclosure was made by the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) of Mumbai, which outlined its Covid-19 management protocol in an affidavit filed before the Bombay High Court.

US says Chinese hacking vaccine research: Reports
- The US Federal Bureau of Investigation and cybersecurity experts believe Chinese hackers are trying to steal research on developing a vaccine against coronavirus, two newspapers reported Monday.
- The FBI and Department of Homeland Security are planning to release a warning about the Chinese hacking as governments and private firms race to develop a vaccine for COVID-19, the Wall Street Journal and New York Times reported.
Treating Covid-19: Clinical trials using arthritis drug get nod
- India has begun multi-centre clinical trials of tocilizumab for treating Covid-19. Tocilizumab is indicated for the treatment of adult patients with moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis. Tocilizumab blocks IL-6 receptors and has shown encouraging clinical results, including temperature returning to normal quickly and improved respiratory function.
- “The CDSCO (Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation) has approved a vital randomised controlled trial on Covid-19 treatment with a biological called tocilizumab, in the first proposed multi-centre trial with the drug in India,” said Dr AS Soin, national lead investigator for the trial.
Tesla tells California employees to return to work in defiance of county orders
- Tesla Inc on Monday told employees at its primary vehicle factory in California to return to work, defying local officials, who said days earlier that the plant should remain closed as lockdown measures remain in effect to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
- The scuffle comes as states and cities around the United States are experimenting with ways to safely reopen their economies after the virus outbreak shuttered businesses and forced tens of millions of Americans out of work.
Twitter to label ‘misleading’ virus content
- Twitter said Monday it began tagging “misleading” and “disputed” claims about the coronavirus pandemic in a stepped-up effort to label potentially harmful content.
- The move by Twitter comes with social networks struggling to deal with a wave of misinformation and unverified claims about the disease outbreak.
Fiat Chrysler restarts Brazil production after coronavirus shutdown
- Automaker Fiat Chrysler SA on Monday said it was gradually restarting operations at its three factories in Brazil, where operations had been halted for 48 days due to the new coronavirus outbreak.
- The Italian-American auto firm said in a statement that 6,400 of its roughly 10,000 employees in the country had returned to work.
US registers less than 900 deaths in 24 hours for second day: Tracker
- The United States recorded 830 coronavirus deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 80,352, according to the real-time tally by Johns Hopkins University at 8:30 pm Monday (0030 GMT Tuesday).
- The figure followed Sunday’s toll of 776, the lowest daily tally since March, though major concerns remain over the number of deaths continuing to climb as some US states relax their lockdowns.

Trump rules out renegotiating China trade deal
- US President Donald Trump on Monday ruled out renegotiating the trade agreement signed with China.
- “I’m not interested in that,” Trump told reporters when asked about reports that China was looking to reopen talks about the trade deal signed in January.
- “Not even a little bit,” Trump said. “Let’s see if they live up to the deal that they signed.”
White House recommends tests for all nursing home residents
- With deaths mounting at the nation’s nursing homes, the White House strongly recommended to governors Monday that all residents and staff at such facilities be tested for the coronavirus in the next two weeks.
- Why the government is not ordering testing at the nation’s more than 15,000 nursing homes was unclear. Nor was it clear why it is being recommended now, more than two months after the nation’s first major outbreak at a nursing home outside of Seattle that eventually killed 45 people.
UN says 7 or 8 ‘top’ candidates for a COVID-19 vaccine exist
- The World Health Organization chief said Monday there are around seven or eight ‘top’ candidates for a vaccine to combat the novel coronavirus and work on them is being accelerated.
- WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a U.N. Economic and Social Council video briefing the original thinking two months ago was that it may take 12 to 18 months for a vaccine. But he said an accelerated effort is under way, helped by 7.4 billion euros ($8 billion) pledged a week ago by leaders from 40 countries, organizations and banks for research, treatment and testing.
