At least 15 inmates of Rohini jail in New Delhi have been tested positive for novel coronavirus. The inmates had shared barracks with one of the jail inmate who had earlier tested positive for Covid-19.

Earlier, coronavirus tests were conducted on 19 inmates after one of the inmates at the Rohini jail tested positive. 15 inmates out of these 19 inmates have now tested positive for coronavirus.

“We had conducted Covid-19 testing for 19 inmates of Rohini jail who were sharing barrack with one inmate — who was tested Positive in DDU hospital earlier where he had gone for some other ailment. Their test results have come. 15 out of these 19 inmates have tested positive,” Sandeep Goel, DG Prisons, Delhi said.

Goel also said that one of the staff member at the Rohini jail has also tested positive for coronavirus.

“5 staff had also been put to test. Out of these, one staff (head warder) has tested positive. Rest are negative,” Goel said.

So far, everyone who were tested at the Rohini jail including those tested positive are “asymptomatic”.

The inmates who have tested positive have now been kept in isolation quarantine barrack.

Head Warder Vinay Kumar and few other staff members have been sent for home quarantine.

“Regular medical screening of all the inmates is already being done and will continue. Disinfection and sanitisation process is being done. All necessary action as per medical protocol is being taken,” Goel said.
